If there’s one thing that screams Valentine’s Day, it’s a marriage proposal. Anyone who has already found love or every retailer sees it as an attempt to make more sales. It’s a completely different day for anyone who sees anything in romance. Finally you can tell your secret love the truth. Now it’s time to surprise your partner even more.

I did that last year too. After a number of weeks of preparation and amusement, not to mention nerves, the high word was finally out. I asked her in the middle of the dance floor. I even got down on my knees. Boy, exciting, indeed.

A few weeks before the Valentine’s Day ball at our dance school, the dance teacher announced that you could surprise your Valentine with a poem. This was then read by the dance teacher, of course in a “Candlelight” voice. This was the perfect opportunity for me to ask her. After nine months of being a “set”, I thought it was about time. I just knew it was right.

I had already carefully asked her in the weeks before what she would think of the idea. I don’t think I could have handled a “no”. Fortunately, she said “if you asked me now I wouldn’t say no. It just feels good.”

Still, I struggled to compose a poem. Everything I could think of sounded corny and far-fetched. When the pressure finally came, that is, between dance class and the Valentine’s Ball that same evening, the poem fell from my pen. The sentences, one more beautiful than the other, flowed naturally onto the paper. I got butterflies in my stomach. In a few hours we would finally be officially engaged.

The dance teacher knew about my plan. I had told him the week before that I was going to ask her to the Valentine’s Ball. He very nicely saved my poem for halfway through the evening. When he had finished speaking the sentences, my question followed: “Dear, will you marry me?”

What a fantastic feeling it was when she said yes. The world seemed to spin and glitter. As befits a future bridal couple, we were allowed to get used to the attention we would receive on our wedding day: Standing in a circle and receiving all the praise, love and attention from the guests present.

The wedding was a great success. The weather was fantastic, dry all the time. Only after the party was over did it start to rain a little bit. It’s been five years since our wedding. Today we celebrate our ‘wooden anniversary’ again.

I can honestly say that I have not regretted a single day. On to the next five, and hopefully many more.
