Internet advertisements, annoying? Or necessary?

You can hardly open a website anymore without being bombarded with advertisements. Almost every site has advertisements. And that can sometimes be very annoying.

On some websites it seems like a sport to place as many advertisements as possible. Because of the advertisements it is sometimes difficult to find the real information. These advertising parties often participate in this as well. The advertisement is then indistinguishable from real information. Before you know it, you’ve clicked a button that you thought would take you to the next page, but actually opens a page with even more advertising.

Advertisements can consist of different formats. A small advertisement between the text or in a column, such as on this website, is usually not (very) annoying. Things are different when the entire page is blocked by an advertisement from some car brand or something else or when it is indistinguishable from the information on a web page.

Besides being irritating, it is often also slowing down. Your browser has to get information from different places. And that may well take longer than you would like, especially when they are commercials.

Advertising in videos

And what do you think of advertising in videos on Youtube , nu.nl , Telegraaf.nl and so on. Before your video starts you will first receive an advertisement, and if you are unlucky this will last 30 seconds. And every now and then you can skip it, every now and then. And when the one-minute-fifteen video is over, you immediately get advertising again. It would be something if we had that on TV. You’re in the right place GTST or Mr. Frank Makes a Pronunciation and there you have advertising again. Even before Mr. Frank has introduced the defendants, you skip to the commercial again.

And then we haven’t even talked about the personalized advertisements yet. If you have looked at something at coolblue.nl , aliexpress.com or another online store, it seems as if you are being chased by advertisements from those online stores.

Well, I have a surprise for you: It is. These websites place files (cookies) on your computer. This makes it easy to track where you are, what you do and buy. Just like a cow with such a tag.

Why are there so many advertisements on the Internet?

That’s very simple: It makes money. Advertisements often generate advertising revenue for the website owner. Looking at some websites, I think it must make a pretty penny.

For some website operators, advertising revenue means the difference between being able to run a website or not, especially if the information is offered for free.

For other parties, I won’t name names, it seems as if the shareholders have to be kept satisfied.

Is there nothing that can be done?

Of course you can do something about it. You can use advertisement blockers (‘ad blockers’) to at least rid the web pages of advertisements. This is relatively simple and often means that you can receive and read your web pages faster. For mobile use, it often also means that you will use up your data bundle less quickly.

Blocking advertisements, is that allowed?

Well, you ultimately decide what you bring in, so why shouldn’t you decide whether you get advertising or not? Finally, you can also stick a yes-no sticker on your mailbox. Then you will also be spared from all kinds of unaddressed advertising work.

There is even an option in most modern browsers to not be tracked (Do Not Track or DNT). If advertisers would respect this, you would in any case not receive personalized advertisements. You can probably hear it from the tone: It is on a voluntary basis, the results are less positive.

But then the website owner/website/newspaper/newsletter no longer receives any income

Um, yes, that’s right. If that is important to you, you can of course just leave the advertisements where they are. You might also consider looking at other locations for your information. Instead of a free newspaper on the internet, you can also use a paid variant, such as an online subscription to a regular newspaper or to an aggregator such as Blendle .

If you want to continue sponsoring vloggers, you can also visit Patreon . You can often sponsor the vlogger, so you get more information and less advertising.

Count your profit, I would say.
