For another project of mine, I have already written a text in the past that is actually home automation. To avoid directing you elsewhere, I’ll just post it here again.
What is home automation?
You regularly see the term home automation on TV in programs such as “Eigen Huis en Tuin” and “House Vision”, but what exactly is home automation?
When you analyze the term you arrive at an electronic house. The term “home automation” is a combination of the words “domus” and “electronics”. Domus means house in Latin. Literally it means the control of electrical appliances in a house/building by electronics and IT.
Is home automation limited to controlling the lighting as is often shown? The answer to this is no. In practice it goes much further. An integrated system ensures an increase in comfort, convenience, flexibility, communication and safety. Awareness of the home through sensors is also part of this.
Wikipedia says the following about this:
The integration of technology and services, for a better quality of living and living.
An example
You come home tired from work in the evening. A lot has happened today to think about. As you drive your car into the street, the exterior lights automatically turn on. Cold and shivering, you walk to the front door, which has already been unlocked. You don’t have to use keys to get in, as your house recognizes your handprint.
The door opens and you walk in, just as the lights in the hall turn on. You see that the postman has done his best again and picks up a number of envelopes and magazines. You hang your coat on the coat rack and you hear your favorite music playing. As you walk to the kitchen, you can already smell the coffee. The last drops of espresso are just falling into a cup.
The screen of your refrigerator shows that there were visitors at the door today who left a message. “Later,” you think to yourself, “now let’s take off your shoes and relax.”
You walk to the living room, where the lights are burning softly. You put on warm slippers, it was a chilly day today. Fortunately, your house turned on the heating while you were driving home, so you can now enjoy a nice and warm house. You lie down on the couch with your espresso. Wonderful, just a moment for yourself.
In short: Home automation is automating your home to make life a little easier and more comfortable!
Is it worth the money?
Everyone has to decide that for themselves, but I think it’s worth the money. Nothing is better than coming home to a warm and lit house in winter. That comfort costs a bit of money.
