Do you also enjoy birthdays? Nice to catch up with everyone.

Some birthdays fly by. Just when it starts to get fun, everyone leaves. Other birthdays just don’t seem to pass by.

For a number of people, the birthday is fairly traditional. At exactly eight o’clock everyone is at the door. Coffee, pastry, ding dong, the bell rings again. The same people are always a little later and expect that they will also get a cup of coffee and a pastry. I am one of those myself.

After the pastry we switch to the soft drink with a snack and then everyone can join in. The bowl of snacks is passed around again. The umpteenth beer or wine is opened. And around eleven or half past twelve the first person gets up, after which about everyone leaves. There are always a few late stayers who either don’t have to get up early the next morning, or put up with it. You’re busy all evening, without a moment for yourself.

I hadn’t celebrated my birthday with friends and family in several years. Not last year either. I had already told Tineke a few times that I would prefer to hire a waiter or butler for my birthday, so that I too could enjoy my birthday. Tineke took this to heart and completely surprised me. During a dance evening, around my birthday, she invited everyone to the dance school. I didn’t know anything about it! What a nice evening that was.

This is something I will definitely do more often.
