New headphones: The Sennheiser Momentum M2 IEi

It was time again for new headphones to use with my phone. I have no idea how I manage it, but they usually do not last very long. The only headphones that hold up reasonably well are the standard Apple earbuds that ship with iPhones—and, of course, Sennheiser headphones.

I prefer in-ear headphones: the earpiece sits really in the ear (intra-aural), and ideally with slightly soft tips. With the standard Apple Earpods I immediately get sore ears; apparently my ears do not like hard materials much.

Choosing Sennheiser was logical for me. I have had several Sennheiser models before, including the Sennheiser CX3.00—they worked so well that I bought another pair when the first one broke (entirely my fault). I enjoyed the second pair, a CX4.00 II, for a long time. The downside of the CX4.00 is that it has no microphone.

Sennheiser Momentum M2 IEi

After extensive research (a full ten minutes) I chose the Sennheiser Momentum M2 IEi in-ear headphones.

Sennheiser markets the product with all kinds of superlatives: phrases like “Chic and refined” and “Magnificent and powerful,” but also “Adaptable and ergonomic” and “Functional and durable.” I agree. The plugs look attractive and feel comfortable. When I look at the finish and the thickness of the cable, I absolutely believe they are built to last.

I said I had spent about ten minutes researching headphones. That is mostly because I already had a pretty clear idea of what I wanted:

  • A known brand
  • Proven sound quality
  • Rugged looks
  • Clean finish
  • Inline remote in the cable
  • Works with Siri

The Momentum M2 meets those requirements. My only nitpick is that there is no Lightning adapter in the box—but that does not spoil the fun.

Sound quality

I am very happy with the sound quality of the Momentum M2. Sound is always subjective, but the Momentum M2 sounds like what I am used to from Sennheiser. The Momentum M2 comes with several ear tips so you can match the shape and size of your ear. That way you seal yourself off completely and can enjoy your music to the fullest. You do not need to worry about outside noise drowning out your music, as long as you use the right tips.

What HiFi reviewed the Momentum M2, especially the sound. I cannot disagree.

What you get

The box contains:

  • Momentum in-ear headphones
  • A set of ear tips in several sizes
  • A carrying case
  • Plenty of listening enjoyment

No iPhone?

What—no iPhone? Luckily you can still enjoy your music to the full, because the Momentum M2 is not only for iPhone (IEi) but also for Android devices (IEG).

Conclusion

All in all I am very pleased with the Sennheiser Momentum M2 IEi. They are comfortable, they sound good, and they were not excessively expensive. I am sure I will get a lot of enjoyment out of them.
