ChatGPT and generative AI are increasingly making headlines. More and more, you hear concerns that it could be harmful to employment. Two lines later you read that AI is the solution for the labor market shortages. Yet another two lines claim that AI (or the people behind it?) do not strictly adhere to the legitimacy of the sources on which it is trained and can just as easily generate an ‘original’ work, including the signature of the painter or writer. These are precisely the topics I do not want to discuss.

Adding Discussions To Hugo

I mentioned last time that in the meantime I’ve switched again, now from WordPress to Hugo. One of the things I missed was a way for you, the reader, to respond.

That’s now been resolved.

Static Pages

As I indicated in my previous post, I switched to a static page generator. One of the properties of static pages is that they are, well, static. You can obviously add JavaScript, but in principle, the pages are already generated. Therefore, hosts for static pages often do not have databases or the like to store comments. Now, you have to ask yourself if you really want that, because let’s face it, comments are not exactly ‘Big Data.’ So, you need to use something else, or not allow comments. Since I’m hoping for some interaction, I decided to add a comment system.

I’m quite a chaotic person. Yep, I do have self-awareness, at least in that respect. I love many things and doing many things. I start a lot of projects, but I don’t finish all of them. Or rather: They are in various stages of ‘complete’.

That sometimes gives you the feeling that you’re not getting things done, or that they don’t matter. Especially since I write these things for myself. But a few weeks ago, I decided that things have to change. Not only because conversations with my coach made some issues clear, or because things are a bit messy at my daily job. Of course not 😃

And switched again.. Now from Wordpress to Hugo

I’ve again dropped Wordpress . I’m now converting my website into Hugo , a static page generator built in Go. It seems like I enjoy the changing process more than the writing, but nothing could be further from the truth.

Your Kickstarter pledges in a Jekyll site

For our family website I wanted to create a page that contained all my pledges on Kickstarter.

Since I couldn’t find the right plugin for Jekyll I created it myself.
It was my first try with Ruby, so perhaps some things aren’t as good as they can be. If you spot things like that, please let me know.

Building Nokogiri on El Capitan

Last week I couldn’t generate one of my websites with Jekyll. After some research I noticed that it was complaining about Nokogiri. I had the problem before, but I didn’t document it well enough so I had to troubleshoot the whole process again.
It seems that everytime I have an update, security or not, compiling of Nokogiri goes wrong.

I had all sorts of error messages:

ERROR: Error installing nokogiri: ERROR: Failed to build gem native extension.
Failed to build gem native extension. libxml2 version 2.6.21 or later is required!

and more I unfortunately didn’t write down.

Check the readability of a post before posting

As I mentioned earlier I really like the things that the Yoast SEO plugin does for WordPress for search engine optimization (SEO). One of those things is the readability check.

Yoast checks each article you write for its readability, in other words: Is your article easy to read? You are writing for your readers, are you not?

I slightly modified the rakefile from www.mikemackintosh.com to suit my own needs. The original checked if the Flesch-Kinkaid readability was below 80. If it was, it failed the task, so the site wouldn’t be build.

Jekyll SEO from a rake task

I really like the things that the Yoast SEO plugin does for WordPress for search engine optimization (SEO). With it you can check your posts on various things in your post that a search engine keeps into consideration.

I was missing this functionality in Jekyll, until I came across the Jekyll SEO tool from Brett Hardin. The script itself was last updated in 2013, but still does its thing.

For a dutch blog I was searching for a nice template. Since I’m recently switched from WordPress to Jekyll it had to be a Jekyll template. Soon I realized that I could use a Jekyll ready template, but I could also convert a generic template.
