Old software on new Windows — “fun” with updates

Ohh, what fun it is to have old software on top of new software..

Last couple of days I’ve been installing service packs and security fixes on some Windows 2003 servers for a client.

Everything went like clockwork. The first servers had no errors during install and were working normally after the install.

Then the pain began.. Some kind of WebDav client was installed on one of the servers. There was no way to activate it again after the Windows updates. The system gave me an error stating that I had to call the sales department te reactivate my account. So that’s what I did.. In my best school English (English isn’t my native language, but you probably guessed that already).

Virtualization, the new battleground?

History is repeating itself…

Through the collaboration between Microsoft and Novell, Microsoft now has access to a Linux distribution that includes virtualization software.

Microsoft is going to support SuSe Linux within their Virtual Server software. In addition, Microsoft is going to build drivers and tools that ensure Windows Server runs optimally in Xen, the Open Source virtualization platform.

The collaboration does not stop at virtualization. Steps will also be taken to exchange information between Active Directory and eDirectory.

One of the big advantages (in my view) is that the graphical environment is built on PowerShell, which means all actions performed from the graphical environment are converted into a command executed by PowerShell.

This has another significant benefit. If certain functionality is not available in the graphical environment, it can often still be executed from the PowerShell command line.
Even in the case where the commands are not present by default, they are often added in the form of scripts (commandlets) or DLLs.

Open Source? Open Standards!

The following article appeared on nu.nl

“Eight major municipalities are jointly opposing the dominance of Microsoft software on their employees’ computers. They hope to persuade the companies they do business with in IT, automation companies like Centric and Getronics PinkRoccade, to support alternatives that are often much cheaper.”

As is often the case, I get the feeling that the people who wrote this article don’t really understand what they are talking about. Is it about Open Source (access to the source code of software) or Open Standards (WWW, LDAP, SMTP, etc.).
